To support New Zealand Cyber Security Awareness Week, which kicks off on Monday the 27th of May, Norton has released new mobile insights from its annual Norton Cybercrime Report, one of the world’s largest consumer cybercrime studies, aimed at understanding the latest security trends and people’s online social and mobile behaviours.
The insights reveal that we are becoming increasingly dependent on our mobile devices, with a third (30 percent) of New Zealanders admitting they could never give up their mobile devices, and half (50 percent) reporting that they use a mobile device to access the Internet.
It appears that cybercriminals are also turning their attention to growing mobile and social networks, with 16 percent of New Zealand adults falling victim to social or mobile cybercrime in 2012. This reflects what was seen in this year’s Symantec Internet Security Threat Report which showed that mobile malware increased by 58 percent in 2012, with 32 percent of these threats attempting to steal information.
According to the report, 41 percent of New Zealanders have had a mobile device lost or stolen, yet only 9 percent reported wiping or locking their mobile phone after it went missing, and 45 percent don’t even take the basic step of securing their mobile device with a password.
In light of these trends, New Zealanders awareness of mobile security best practice is low, with 63 percent of mobile device users unaware that mobile security solutions exist for their device, and only 16 percent reporting that they use a security solution.
Norton’s top tips for staying safe on mobile include strong passwords, never save any PIN, passwords or very private information on mobile devices and be cautious of all notifications including those with links.
It is also important to understand and make use of privacy settings on mobile devices and social media networks so that key information is only shared with people whom you trust.
